Johns Manville Receives 2014 SmartWay Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

DENVER, Colo. – October 3, 2014 – Johns Manville (JM), a global building products manufacturer, today announced it was honored with a SmartWay® Excellence Award from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for JM’s leadership in supply chain environmental performance and energy efficiency. The company was recognized as the top performer in the “medium-size shipper” category.

JM enrolled in the SmartWay program in early 2008 as part of the company’s comprehensive plan to reduce the environmental impacts of its global supply chain and logistics operations. As a certified SmartWay carrier and shipper, JM proactively promotes SmartWay to all its partners, industry peers, suppliers and other organizations involved in its business. To date, JM has helped or encouraged more than 150 carriers to register in the SmartWay program.

“Being a SmartWay-certified shipper has allowed us to improve the efficiency of our operations and deepen JM’s commitment to sustainable business practices,” said David Fisher, Director of Global Logistics for JM. “While SmartWay requires shippers to use certified carriers for 50 percent of their shipping, we’re proud to report that we now ship 86 percent of our freight through participating carriers. Using SmartWay’s formulas for fuel, CO2 and NOx, we’re confident that JM’s shipping operations have a much less significant impact on the environment.”

JM manages its entire supply chain with a focus on safety, efficiency, integrity and compliance. In addition to the company’s work with carriers, JM maintains a SmartWay-certified truck fleet at its manufacturing plant in Hazle Township, Pa. JM’s fleet is proven to be more fuel efficient than comparable commercial carriers.

In addition to energy efficiency and carbon emission reduction strategies, JM’s broader corporate sustainability efforts include: long-term life cycle assessments for all major product lines; solid-waste and water usage reduction programs; economic and social improvement initiatives; and other similar efforts.

Johns Manville was one of only 11 companies to receive this distinction, representing the best environmental performers among SmartWay’s nearly 3,000 partners. JM and its fellow 2014 SmartWay Excellence Award recipients were honored at the Council of Supply Chain Management Professionals annual conference held in San Antonio, Texas on Sept. 23, 2014.
