Johns Manville Introduces High Performance Fibers for PP

Today at the annual JEC Composites Show, Johns Manville (JM), a market-leading manufacturer of glass fiber products, announced the introduction of a new chopped strand glass fiber for high performance polypropylene (PP) designed for automotive applications, such as inlet manifolds and front-end carriers to reduce weight of structural parts.

"Lightweight and long heat exposure performance are important drivers for automotive engineers designing cost effective and increasingly demanding automotive components with engineered thermoplastic polymers," said Enno Henze, senior vice president of JM’s Engineered Products Europe/Asia business.

Johns Manville's new ThermoFlow® 636 provides improved mechanical properties in tensile strength and impact resistance by 10 percent versus standard short glass fiber chopped strands. ThermoFlow® 636, available in 10 and 13 micron fiber diameter, maintains the exceptional high flow feeding performance of current ThermoFlow® chopped strands with low fuzz and less downtime to the benefit of our customers using large extruders even with high glass load.

“Our commitment to innovation in short- and long-glass fibers for engineered thermoplastics further supports our customers who are striving for innovative solutions in thermoplastics through lighter-weight composites materials,” said Henze.
