Breathe Easy: New Production Line for Indoor Air Filter Media

As the global focus on clean indoor air and sustainable filtration solutions grows, we at Johns Manville are stepping up with a commitment to the HVAC industry by launching a new, state-of-the-art micro fiberglass production line. This new unit at our Wertheim, Germany site is more than an expansion; it’s a leap forward in our mission to foster cleaner, healthier indoor environments - from busy offices to high-stakes hospital rooms.

Investing in Cleaner Air, Reducing Energy

The air-laid Evalith® micro fiberglass nonwovens we’re producing are designed to capture even the smallest particles, including viruses, bacteria, and dust – down to just one micrometer (for context, over 70 times smaller than the diameter of a human hair). Known for its durability, this material ensures consistent filtration performance over the life of the filter. Not only does it support high-quality air, but it also boosts energy efficiency, helping filter manufacturers achieve A+ ratings. This results in reduced energy consumption for end users and a smaller carbon footprint, providing clean air while protecting the planet.  “High-performance filtration is essential in spaces where air quality matters most,” says Christian Hassmann, Director of JM’s Filtration & Separation business. “This investment affirms our commitment to innovation, sustainability, and operational excellence.”

Strengthening Local Economy

As a domestic supplier, this new production unit isn’t just about advancing technology; it’s also an investment in the local economy. Since our inauguration in July 2024, we’ve created 12 new jobs in Wertheim, with plans to expand further. The project reflects years of planning and teamwork. “Our start-up has exceeded expectations,” says Wertheim Plant Manager Alexander Ueckert, who’s proud of the team’s accomplishments in bringing this cutting-edge facility to life. “This achievement reflects the dedication of our team and the potential for continued growth and development here in Wertheim,” Ueckert adds.

Leading in Sustainability

The new production line not only supports indoor air quality, but it also sets new standards for environmental responsibility.  “A significant portion of the investment was dedicated to sustainability technologies,” adds Christian Hassmann. “We installed an innovative exhaust system using a water counterflow principle and an electrostatic field to filter out solids and gases, setting new standards for environmental protection and efficiency. Additionally, we’ve implemented high-efficiency process water and heat recovery systems to minimize water and wastewater consumption, while using energy sustainably and efficiently.”
