Johns Manville Recognized with Green Colorado Award

Johns Manville (JM), a leading global manufacturer of energy-efficient building products and engineered specialty materials, is receiving recognition for setting sustainability standards for other businesses to follow. ColoradoBiz magazine spotlighted JM as one of 50 Colorado firms on a greener path at its inaugural Green Colorado Awards presented last night in Denver.

“Sustainability is a journey and we work hard each and every day to make JM a better resident of the community,” said Mary Rhinehart, JM president and CEO. “We are proud to be recognized as leading the way in creating sustainable products and practices that deliver a powerful JM Experience to our stakeholders. Our goal is to make a positive contribution – financially, environmentally and socially – as we build a sustainable future for JM.”

Three years ago, JM began publishing an annual report on sustainability. The latest “We Build Environments” report, released in May of this year, presents the company’s approach to building sustainable solutions for the future and shows its progress towards accomplishing its long-term sustainability goals. JM is committed to reducing the waste and carbon intensity of its operations, increasing energy efficiency, decreasing solid waste and using more recycled materials.

“We take our responsibility to protect our people and the environment today and for future generations very seriously,” said Dr. Tim Swales, Johns Manville’s vice president of corporate research and development and chief sustainability officer. “We are constantly focused on looking for innovative ways to improve our processes and products. Our sustainability efforts are rooted deep within our company and are a part of everything we do.”

JM takes a three-pronged approach to sustainability that extends further than environmental responsibility and encompasses economic and social responsibilities. The company pays particular attention to safety, employee practices and involvement in the communities in which it is based.

In late 2013, the company completed a renovation of its headquarters offices in Denver, Colo. with a specific focus of creating a more sustainable facility. The company used many products it makes as well as some made by sister Berkshire Hathaway companies and JM customers to build an office space that features low-energy lighting, ergonomic work stations, an energy-efficient HVAC system, and centralized recycling areas.

JM received recognition in the “Real Estate/Construction/Development” category at the Green Colorado Awards ceremony.
