JM Lewiston Roofing Specialty Products Facility Recognized as OSHA VPP Star Site

The Johns Manville (JM) Lewiston roofing systems facility has been awarded the Occupational Safety and Health Act (OSHA) Voluntary Protection Program (VPP) Star. OSHA’s formal presentation and ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, October 4 at the Lewiston facility. Out of seven million work facilities in the United States, this important recognition has only been awarded to 2,374 sites since the program’s inception 30 years ago. The Lewiston facility is only the sixth fabricated metal production plant in the United States to achieve this honor.

The ceremony will be attended by JM employees and their guests, state and local dignitaries, and leaders from the company’s headquarters in Denver, Colorado. Speeches highlighting the importance of safety and the plant’s special safety achievements will be made by the leadership of Johns Manville as well as distinguished guests. Bill Coffin from the Department of Labor, OSHA, will present the VPP Star flag and plaque to the Lewiston team and is expected to share key insights into safety and the VPP program.

VPP is designed to recognize and promote effective safety and health management, and participants include a select group of facilities that have displayed outstanding results, programs, and a healthy partnership with their facility employees and a focus on keeping employees safe. The program helps to achieve OSHA’s objective of partnership between OSHA and industry to more effectively protect workers. The JM facility is the first manufacturing facility to achieve this designation in the City of Lewiston.

OSHA awarded the Lewiston facility’s VPP Star status after conducting a comprehensive assessment of its safety processes and procedures, and an intensive on-site audit by a four-member inspection team. “Star” status is the highest level of achievement under the VPP program, and is bestowed on facilities that have a three-year average injury rate at or below the industry average. During the workplace audit, led by OSHA’s Tim Irving in November 2011, the audit team reviewed workplace conditions, safety and health systems and procedures, and conducted interviews with a number of employees.
