Johns Manville (JM), a Berkshire Hathaway company and a leading manufacturer and marketer of premium-quality building and specialty products, has received the Spirit of Hope Award for charitable giving through its annual employee giving campaign from the Mile High Chapter of the United Way. The award recognizes companies that actively support their communities through financial donations and volunteering efforts.
"Johns Manville and its employees have a long history of being civically active, charitable and involved," said Steve Hochhauser, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Johns Manville. "We are proud to receive this award, which reflects our commitment to the communities in which we live and work."
"Johns Manville's employee giving campaign demonstrates the company's commitment to give back to their community in a valuable, meaningful way. We are proud and excited to have had the chance to work with Johns Manville and we look forward to continuing to contribute to the community together," said Michael Durkin, president, Mile High United Way.
During 2005, Johns Manville and its employees donated close to a half million dollars to aid the local community through their annual employee giving campaign; and over the past decade, they have contributed close to $5 million to charities in Colorado. Additionally, JM Denver-area employees have generously given their time to aid in community programs, donating over 5,400 hours of volunteer time on 38 projects in 2005 alone.
Johns Manville Disaster Relief Contributions
In addition to supporting ongoing community programs, Johns Manville and its employees have also made significant donations to relief efforts in the wake of recent disasters, both nationally and internationally, including the tsunami in Asia and Hurricane Katrina in the Gulf Coast region of the United States.
In February 2005, JM and its employees donated $250,000 to the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter in Denver for the Red Cross International Response Fund aiding victims of the tsunami in Asia. The donation consisted of a combination of contributions from JM and its employees, as well as matching funds from JM.
In September 2005, JM made a $100,000 donation to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund to aid in Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts. Additionally, the company coordinated a program to match employee contributions to this cause. JM matched employee contributions to any charitable organization that conducts Hurricane Katrina relief by making an additional donation to the Red Cross. Due to the extreme nature of this tragedy, JM did not place a limit on its matching contribution. To date, $240,000 has been contributed from JM and its employees to aid in Hurricane Katrina recovery efforts.
