Denver, Colorado (10/9/1998) --- As 120 mile-per-hour winds of Hurricane Georges swept Puerto Rico, JM roofs stood up to the test. Three high profile roofs--including one at San Juan Airport--withstood the wind and rain and came through without damage despite the fact they were located in areas that were devastated.
The roofs on Terminal B and the B-C connector at the Luis Munoz Marin Airport, K-Mart in the Centrum Shopping Center in Caguas and the Northcoast Superaqueduct in Arecibo, Puerto Rico withstood the storm unscathed. These three roofs, installed by Atlas Roofing, were among many JM roofs installed by a variety of contractors that stood up to the storm. According to Nicolas Cela, president of Atlas Roofing, "If you follow the manufacturer's instructions for installation, you won't have any problems."
The 30,000 square-foot modified bitumen roof on Terminal B at the Louis Munoz Marin Airport was installed approximately 1½ years ago. The concrete deck had three plies of GlasPly® IV felt and a DynaGlas® cap sheet.
The 124,000 square foot built-up roof on K-Mart is one year old and is located in Caguas, Puerto Rico, which was one of the areas hardest hit by the storm. This four-ply graveled-surfaced built-up roof was installed over 1.5 inch isocyanurate foam insulation and ¾ inch Fesco® Board insulation.
Atlas Roofing had only just completed the 18,000 square foot built-up roof on the Northcoast Superaqueduct in Arecibo, Puerto Rico when the storm hit. This five-ply roof had a concrete deck with 2 inches of Fesco® Board insulation hot mopped, four plies of GlasPly® IV felt and a GlasKap® cap sheet.
"We are very pleased, but not surprised by the performance of these roofing systems," said Fernando Milanes, Johns Manville Puerto Rico territory manager. "When you combine quality products with the work of a good contractor, you can count on a good roofing system," he said.
