Denver, Colorado (12/16/1998) --- The roofing contractor, Kalkreuth Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. and the general contractor P.J. Dick, Inc. faced a number of challenges when they were building and roofing the new Jerome Schottenstein Center Value City Arena at Ohio State University. First, the architects, Moody/Nolan of Columbus, Ohio wanted a certain look for the domed roof with a flat top. Secondly, the job had to be completed in a very short time.

While the architect wrote a general specification, John Kalkreuth of Kalkreuth Roofing selected UltraGard® PVC single-ply roofing from Johns Manville both because of the product, which is competitively priced, and because of the company's technical support. The uniqueness of the design required a custom membrane that was 96 mils thick as well as a standard 60 mil. The architects also ordered a custom dove gray color.
"The architect was very particular about the look of the job," said Kalkreuth. "We had to be very specific with sheet layout so that it was symmetric on rounded corners. Material handling also was a challenge. P.J. Dick had to put a tower crane in the center of the building as the metal deck was installed," he said.
Because it was a custom job, Kalkreuth had to take very specific measurements from the blueprint to determine the amount of membrane required to avoid waste and also to prevent ordering additional material that would require a special production run. He said that Randy Roth, a regional sales manager with JM, was instrumental in making sure the plant could supply what they needed, when they needed it.
Another challenge was that the project had to be completed in 21 months. As a result, the roof was broken into five sections. As P.J. Dick completed the framing on one section, Kalkreuth would apply the insulation and membrane to that section. According to Jon Abbey, vice president of P.J. Dick, "Kalkreuth did whatever it took to keep up with the job and coordinate with the schedule."
The 135,000 square foot roofing project had a base of JM ISO 1™ polyiso insulation mechanically attached to a metal deck. It was fastened on 12-inch centers with high load Schottenstein Arena fasteners. Because of the design specifications, it was necessary to use up to 18 inches of tapered insulation and special order fasteners. The 60 mil UltraGard PVC was used on the inclined areas with the 96 mil on the flat, the drain valleys and the first 25 feet up the incline from the drain valleys. The roof carries a 15-year NDL guarantee.
Kalkreuth was very pleased with the technical support and in-progress inspections provided by Johns Manville. Bill Koch is the regional manager for UltraGard roofing and Scott Sabourin provided technical support.
