Denver, Colorado (3/15/1999) --- The diversity of the Johns Manville product line and its single source guarantee program were key reasons why two of its roofing systems were selected for a new prototype entertainment facility, Tinseltown Studios, in Anaheim, California. Tinseltown Studios, which is owned by Ogden Entertainment (a division of Ogden Corporation), is a themed dinner event experience where every guest gets to be a star at a major Hollywood-style TV awards show. Turner Special Projects in association with Studio Avanti is the design-build team.
Originally the specification was for a built-up roofing system. However, the roofing contractor, John McClain of Owen Pacific, felt that because of some of the unique design aspects, a built-up system on part of the roof and a single ply system on the sloping section would be in the best interests of the project and the owner.
"We needed to go with a single source supplier so that the roofing system would be covered by a single source guarantee," McClain said. "In addition, by working with Johns Manville, we were able to modify the specifications to accommodate two types of roofing systems at a no cost change order which made the client happy," he said.
The high bay roof has 4-inch insulation over a metal deck with Johns Manville mechanically fastened UltraGard® SR-50. The low bay built-up roof consists of 1 ply of Ventsulation® mechanically fastened to a lightweight insulating concrete deck. This was covered with two plies of GlasPly® IV and finally a GlasKap® cap sheet. The roof carries a 10-year NDL (no dollar limit) guarantee.
Because the roof involved two product lines, a Johns Manville team was assembled to meet the needs of this project. Sam Salmone was involved in the overall roofing project and specification and Steve Bauchiero advised on the built-up roofing system. According to McClain, the job went smoothly and he worked well with the Johns Manville team to make the necessary changes.
