Design Creates Challenges for Roofing Contractor

Four-ply JM Roof Selected for Citrus Park Mall Project

Denver, Colorado (5/24/1999) --- Unusual shapes and a variety of levels created a challenge for GRI of West Florida, the roofing contractor on the Citrus Park Mall in Citrus Park, Florida. The architects, RTKL Associates, Inc., for the new retail shopping mall designed the mall with clerestories (raised sections with windows on either side) in a variety of sizes.

"The difficulty with this project was the number of levels, unusual shapes and a very large center section," said Bob Embow, President of GRI. "The sections were different lengths and some were on a radius and arch rather softly," he said.

The Johns Manville 560,000 square foot built-up roofing system consisted of 2½ inches of E'NRG'Y 2™ and ½ inch Retro-Fit® Board insulations, four plys of GlasPly™ IV felt and a GlasKap™ cap sheet. A white cap sheet was used for its reflective value, which is important in Florida.

"Building owners are much more comfortable with a built-up roof," said Embow. "A built-up roof is very serviceable and allows tenants maximum access," he said.

While the roof surface was BUR, UltraGard®, a JM single ply EPDM membrane, was used on the vertical surface as a flashing. "Because of the elevation changes and the variety of levels, we had to bring the material up through a skylight in the center of the building," Embow said.

The general contractor on the project was Hoar Construction of Birmingham, Alabama. Dean Ingleman was the Johns Manville representative on the project. "Dean Ingleman is very knowledgeable and effective," Embow said. "He worked with us in terms of pricing, delivery and warranty and had a lot to do with our decision to use a JM roofing system," he said.
