Denver, Colorado (10/16/2003) --- The design of the Bed Bath & Beyond at the "Main Street at Exton" in Exton, Pa. fits in well with its surroundings. Main Street at Exton has been designed to replicate a town center, with brick sidewalks, open promenades and courtyards. Most stores have dual entries with one opening onto the parking lot and the other opening onto Main Street for an old town feel. Many of the retail buildings there have fake second story facades with windows to give the impression of a town with people living above the stores.
The Bed Bath & Beyond store is a fancy brick building with brick arches on the side. The rest of the Main Street at Exton project has ballasted EPDM roofs, but Bed Bath & Beyond specifically wanted a JM UltraGardÒ PVC membrane, mechanically attached. The company has had success with PVC membranes on its other stores both in terms of performance and energy savings.

The roofing contractor, Progressive Services, Inc. of Dover, Pa., installed 2.7 inch JM polyisocyanurate roof insulation before mechanically attaching the UltraGard SR-50 white membrane on the 34,000-square-foot building. Tapered pre-cut crickets were used to assist with drainage.
The architects, Peterson & Griffith Architects of Needham, Mass. had specified coated copper for gutters and downspouts since they could be seen from the ground. This required some unique detailing for Progressive Services.
"In order to terminate the PVC membrane, we used PVC coated metal at the drip edge," said James Ferguson, vice president for Progressive Services. "By doing so, we were able to properly terminate the PVC roof system, while still utilizing the coated gutter system, thereby maintaining the aesthetics desired by the architect."
Another challenge was the height of the parapet walls. They were between 6 and 7 feet high and had a wide cornice area that was 2 feet wide on horizontal.
"We've always had luck with PVC roofs and we think that Progressive did a quality job of installing this one," said Dave Hill, the construction manager for Jeffrey M. Brown Associates, Inc. of Huntington, PA.
