Q:  Do Johns Manville Permacote® Linacoustic® Std. and HP duct liners comply with the requirements of UL 181?

A:  We have tested our Permacote® Linacoustic® Standard and HP duct liners to the Mold Growth and Humidity Test and Erosion Test of UL 181 Standard forFactory-Made Air Ducts and Air Connectors and these products pass these tests.

We do not reference UL 181 in our Permacote® Linacoustic® duct liner data sheets because UL 181 is not a duct liner standard; it is a standard for duct boards and flexible ducts. The standard that we reference in our Permacote® Linacoustic® duct liner data sheet is ASTM C 1071 Thermal and Acoustic Insulation (Mineral Fiber, Duct Lining Material).

ASTM C 1071 requires passing of the fungi resistance test contained in ASTM C 1338. This is generally considered to be a more severe test than the Mold Growth and Humidity Test of UL 181. ASTM C 1338 utilizes 5 specific fungi spores available from American Type Culture Collection, Rockville, MD, and incubation at 86±4 F. UL 181 uses "bread mold" and incubation at "room temperature".

The erosion requirements of UL 181 and ASTM C 1071 are essentially identical.
